To increase the quality of research at Mulawarman University, the Sharia Economics Study Program held a public lecture with Prof. Dr. Sugiyono, M.Pd, entitled “Qualitative Research Methods for Sharia Economic Development.” The activity was held on Tuesday (27/8/2024) through a Zoom meeting attended by lecturers and students.
Starting the public lecture, Rais Abdullah, the Head of the Sharia Economics Study Program, conveyed the importance of this activity. The public lecture aims to provide students with an overview of various research methods and is also useful for lecturers of the Sharia Economics Study Program in improving research development.
Prof. Sugiyono emphasized the importance of a research roadmap, which is a reference for academics to determine the direction and guidelines for conducting research in the future. Furthermore, Prof. Sugiyono explained the material about the differences in research using qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods. Quantitative research departs from the thought process to prove an idea or test an existing theory. Meanwhile, qualitative research is considered to develop knowledge from the exploration process. “If likened to a funnel, in qualitative research, all information and data are filtered until finally finding suitable, valid, and reliable results,” he explained.
The speaker with four Muri records said good research can produce something new, innovative, and creative. In fulfilling the Indonesian national qualification framework, research at the S1 level is directed to implement existing theories; at the S2 level, it can innovate and improve the theory, while at the S3 level, it is encouraged to create something new.
This activity ended with a discussion session, which showed the enthusiasm of the participants in attending the public lecture delivered by Prof. Sugiyono
